Title: VERB TONE IN TIV: A FOCUS ON TENSE AND ASPECT
Authors: Ignatius Iornenge Usar, Tanzania
Abstract:

This paper examines verb tone in Tiv, a language spoken in Nigeria. The study focuses on the tonal patterns and variations in Tiv verb forms, examining the grammatical role of tone in shaping tonal outputs. The paper utilises data collected through systematic elicitation of paradigmatic data from native Tiv speakers to provide an in-depth analysis of the verb tone system in Tiv, shedding light on this complex aspect of the language. The study demonstrates that grammatical tone is significant in understanding verbal inflectional morphology, particularly in its impact on tense and aspect. Verb tone is distinct from segmental morphemes and can be substantially influenced by surface phonology. The comprehensive study of the Tiv verbal tonal system requires substantial material, including the logically possible combinations of morphemes with distinct input tones that mark various grammatical distinctions.
