| Abstract: This study sets out to explore the phenomenon of epenthesis in the production pre-initial ‘s’ by some Chadian EFL learners of the University of Ndjamena. In total, 46 level Three students of the Department of English at Toukra campus read a text entitled The Smiths, and their readings were recorded using a professional sound recorder. A questionnaire was also used to collect background information about the participants. The recordings were carefully listened to and the portions containing pre-initial ‘s’ were segmented, then faithfully transcribed and interpreted following Language Transfer principles. The findings revealed that epenthesis is a phenomenon that widely occurs in the speech of Chadian EFL learners. It was also discovered that the most prevalent epenthetic renditions in the pronunciation of the words Scrabble, Smith and Sport are [ɪs] and [es]. The study also brought out the issue of double epenthesis as in [sɪs], which also occurred in the productions of the selected learners, even though not many instances were recorded. It should be concluded that pre-initial ‘s’ epenthesis is another major feature of Chadian EFL learners’ pronunciation, and results from negative transfer from Arabic and other local languages. |
